What Is A Cookie?
April 18th, 2006 · Posted in Web technology · 0 CommentsCookies – A cookie is a piece of information that is downloaded onto your computer by the site you are currently visiting. Cookies are very useful in most cases as they are used to store information about you such as preferences or passwords for web sites you visit frequently.
The problems come when cookies are downloaded to your computer without your prior knowledge or agreement. Some of these are harmless such as those used by the big sites like Amazon. However, because you are usually unaware of the download certain people can take advantage of this and hence we now have the scourge of spyware and malware to contend with.
You can alter your browser settings to control the download of cookies and stop them entirely if you want to. If you are using Internet Explorer take a look at the security settings in the tools_options menu.
